Mountain of empty chairs

There are over a million vacancies for the country's most coveted jobs - employment in the Central Government - they are just not getting filled.
The latest NSSO survey shows that India's workforce grew only by two million between 2004-05 and 2009-10, inviting the charge that growth has by passed the job market. One of the reason being the failure to find the right people for the right job is skill shortage.

Ther government has been setting high eligibility targets for jobs that do not need very high skills, hierarchies are rigid and compared to the private sector, government recuritment rules are a tangle of red tape.

India's higher education system is choking, unable to keep up with the numbers of aspirants. The quality of teaching has also been coming down.
There needs to be a comprehensive look at the government recruitment policy and other skill development sectors. We need a cadre of professionals which can meet the demand.
