WEB OBSERVATORY FOR CYBERGAZING
Posted: February 8th, 2013, 2:57 pmAfter all, the world would have been very different today had Sir Berners Lee who invented www - world wide web, tried making money out of the Web. Web can work efficiently only if many use it and in order to make that happen, it has to be given free.
Prof. Dame Wendy Hall who is the President of the Association for Computing Machinery. She was one of the first scientists to undertake research in multimedia and hypermedia. One her pet project is the Web Observatory. Web observatory is a big analytics platform. It is not about data, but how people are using the data and behaving on the Web.
Her work has been significant in many areas - digital libraries, development of the Semantic Web, and the discipline of Web Science. She co founded the Web Science Research initiative in 2006 along with Sir. Tim Berners-Lee & Prof. Nigel Shadbolt . Along with others, she digitised photos, videos and audio content before the Web existed.
She encourages researchers to deposit their data, not just papers. She is currently a Director of the Web Science Trust.
She believes that We need to observe what happens on the Web as our thesis. To do this one has to study it every day to understand the "dynamics of the Web and interaction with technology, and what people do with it.
