This was the first class to run the Econscious tracker for a full cycle, and the first to prove that the mechanism works without anyone standing over it.
How it started
Two labelled bins, a weekly weigh-in, and the daily vibe check. Nothing else was introduced and nobody was given a target.
What happened
Waste to landfill fell steadily for six weeks and then plateaued. The plateau is the interesting part: it marks the point where the remaining waste needed a change the students could not make on their own.
The competitive effect
The scoreboard mattered more than any of the material we produced. It was also the part we had worried about most, on the grounds that it might feel punitive. It did not.
What comes next
Four more classes have asked to join, and the school canteen has agreed to look at the packaging that made up most of the plateau.
